Stars add glitz to eco fashion project

CELEBRITIES are known for having wardrobes stuffed full of extensive designer collections.

But now stars such as actress Emma Thompson, comedian Julian Clary and director Ridley Scott are throwing open their cupboards and joining the latest anti-climate change campaign.

They have all donated pricey but past-it pieces to Camden Council, which will recycle them into funky fashion items. The Small Steps campaign aims to encourage ordinary residents to make small eco-friendly changes - such as revamping their old jeans and jumpers instead of throwing them in the bin.

Discarded clothes and shoes tend to end up in landfill sites, where natural fibres give off the global warming-causing gas methane while man-made fibres do not decompose at all.

At the campaign's launch event tomorrow (Thursday), council workers - together with the national charity TRAID (Textile Recycling for Aid and International Development) - will hold a series of "re-styling" workshops.

Participants will be taught how to transform old clothes - including Ms Thompson's black Prada jacket and Mr Clary's Christian Lacroix shirt - using sewing skills.

They will then get to imagine themselves living a celebrity lifestyle by modelling - and keeping - their creations.

Mr Scott, who donated a cap from his latest film, Robin Hood, said: "It's good to know that the Robin Hood cap I donated will be given a new lease of life."

The Small Steps campaign will also see the launch of a website and a freephone helpline to give advice to wannabe planet-lovers.

Councillor Chris Knight, Camden Council's executive member for the environment, said: "Taking small steps in the way we all work, live and travel can make a huge difference. That's why we are calling on Camden residents to come together to help fight climate change."

l The campaign is being launched at Swiss Cottage Library in Swiss Cottage tomorrow (Thursday). To book a place at the event, which is running from 12.45pm until 7.30pm, e-mail poppy.lyle@camden.gov.uk
