A WOMAN died after she was hit by a double decker bus and dragged underneath the wheels in front of horrified shoppers.

The 27-year-old, from the Orde Hall Street area of Russell Square, was waiting on a pedestrian island outside Holborn tube station shortly after 5pm on Saturday when a number 243 bus ploughed into her.

She was dragged under the wheels and several passers-by tried to help but she was pronounced dead at the scene when an ambulance arrived.

Sergeant Donald Simpson, from the Collision Investigation Unit at Euston Traffic Garage, said: "A double decker bus was coming up Southampton Row towards a left turn outside Holborn station.

"It missed the turn and went through the pedestrian island crashing through two sets of traffic lights and coming to rest against the CCTV camera pole.

"The victim was standing on the island waiting to cross and at some stage during the incident she was hit by the bus and ended up trapped underneath it. There were hundreds of people around but as far as we know there were no other injuries."

The distraught bus driver was taken to hospital suffering from shock.

The victim's mother and father have been informed of her death but her name will not be released until after the post mortem, scheduled for today (Wednesday).

Police want to speak to anyone who witnessed the tragic incident. Sergeant Simpson said: "We are looking for people who saw the actual collision rather than the aftermath. So far we've got 36 names, many of who heard the noise, turned round and saw the carnage but we need people who actually saw the incident as it happened."

Anyone with information should call the Collision Investigation Unit on 020-7388 6806.
