Solar panels to heat water for city farm

A CITY farm has boosted its eco-credentials by reducing its carbon hoof-print.

Kentish Town City Farm in Cressfield Close, Gospel Oak, has installed solar panels to help heat its water.

The eight square metres of solar panel were put on the roof of the farm centre as part of the £500,000 refurbishment of the building. The solar panels generate about half the farm's hot water needs - every year saving £250 and a tonne of polluting carbon dioxide.

Farm co-ordinator Mick Magennis said: "City farms try to lead by example and the solar panels are a fantastic educational tool.

"In the future, when schools visit, we will be able to explain how solar energy works and they can see the benefit from the final product when they wash their hands."

The project was funded with the help of grants including £6,850 from power company EDF Energy.

Peter Hofman of EDF Energy added: "Thousands of young people visiting this farm will be able to see a practical example of renewable energy technology in action.

"Showcase projects, like this one, are helping to shape tomorrow's thinking and behaviour as the world faces up to the challenges of global warming."

The company has awarded £2.6million to more than 150 renewable energy projects since the launch of its "green fund" in 2001.
